Between two worlds the Hmong shaman in America /
The Hmong came to America as refugees. By 1984, roughly 90,000 Hmong--a people of small rural villages--were living in American cities. This film briefly examines the lives of three Hmong families who turn to traditional Hmong shamans for healing ceremonies, and for the comfort of their native culture as they struggle to adapt to a new environment. The Hmong's difficulties include alienation, a profound sense of dislocation, evangelical missionaries, and Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome. The Hmong, caught between two worlds, valiantly struggle to preserve their ancient ways.
